Visas to Germany

Please consult this link to find out whether you need a visa for your stay in Germany. 

If you need a visa, you must make the necessary arrangements with the German consulate or embassy in your country of residence before departure. GIZ, on behalf of the German Global Compact Network, can provide you with an invitation letter to be presented at the embassy or consulate. Please contact the project office for such requests:

Electricity

Note that you might need an adapter to use your electronic devices in Germany. Power plugs/sockets are type C and F (220 V).

Money

Money can be changed or withdrawn at Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL) or Berlin Schoenefeld Airport (SXF).
Numerous ATMs and bank offices are located within walking distance from the hotels. Most hotels and shops accept credit or debit cards; however, many restaurants and cafés do not.

Transportation from the airports

Taxi

A taxi from Tegel Airport (TXL) to Alexanderplatz will cost you approximately 25 EUR and take about 25-30 minutes if traffic is not too heavy.
A taxi from Schoenefeld Airport (SXF) to Alexanderplatz will cost you approximately 40-45 EUR and take about 35-40 minutes if traffic is not too heavy.

Public transport

From Tegel Airport (TXL) take Bus TXL in the direction of “Alexanderplatz”. The journey from the airport to Alexanderplatz will take about 35-40 minutes depending on traffic and you will need to buy a ticket for zones A and B. For further possible connections, please check http://www.bvg.de/en.
To reach the conference venue you can continue on the U5 from “Alexanderplatz” in the direction of “Hönow” or “Frankfurter Allee”. Please exit at “Schillingstraße”, which is the first stop after “Alexanderplatz”.

From Schoenefeld Airport (SXF) take the train “RB14” in the direction of Nauen or “RE7” in the direction of Dessau directly to “Alexanderplatz”. You can also take the S9 in the direction of “Pankow” and change at “Ostkreuz” into the S5, S7 or S75 in the direction of “Spandau”, “Westkreuz” or “Potsdam Hbf”. Please exit at “Alexanderplatz”. The journey will take about 22 – 40 minutes depending on your connection and you will need to buy a ticket for zones A, B and C. For further possible connections, please check http://www.bvg.de/en.

The duration and the costs of a trip by taxi depend on time and distance. Taxis use a meter.

Public transport

The Berlin tariff area is subdivided into zones A, B and C. Usually you will only need zones A and B.

Zone A: Berlin’s inner city up to and including the urban rail ring
Zone B: outside the urban rail ring up to the city boundary
Zone C: Greater Berlin, including the City of Potsdam

Ticket machines are located at all train, underground and urban rail stations. They accept both cash and EC cards.
